Writers' experiences of writing gay/shifter or BDSM

The seventh in my series on writers’ experiences of writing gay, shifter or BDSM stories is from Peyton Clarke talking about her experiences of writing MMF paranormal and BDSM.

Thank you Jennifer for hosting me today.  Hello everyone, my name is Peyton and I must admit I am a fan of shifter, m/m and bdsm romances however I've never written a romance that was exclusively male-male.

I am relatively new to the publishing world.  My first book Blood Bond- The Ferae was released in 2014 with Siren Bookstrand and is a male-male-female paranormal, contemporary erotic romance. It was my first foray into writing MMF's and it turns out that I really, really love writing them. When I started reading menage romances they were all male-female-male romances where the two men shared the woman but did not make love to each other.  I really liked it but often I felt there was something missing in a lot of those stories.  I wanted to find out what it would be like if the three characters shared their hearts, souls and bodies when they slept together.  It intrigued me even more to find out what would happen when two very dominant males got together, fell in love with the same girl and then one of the men chose to be submissive to the other male in the relationship.

Wow!  Why and what caused the man to decide to submit was just as important as how and why the female decided to submit to two men despite one of them was submissive too.  I believed that their strength not only was in their ability to lead but their willingness to kneel in the face of their desire to seek inner fulfillment both emotionally and intimately.

That's what I thought about when I created the characters for my latest book Bound To Them.  A western, BDSM, contemporary romance set in Wyoming it centers around Jake Hargate, a man who came from a wealthy family where everyone is trained to win and lead, Max Krause, the son of a judge, who grew up in a household where his father was known locally as the 'hanging judge' and Ally Krause, a woman raised on a small farm in California and fled her hometown in order to escape an abusive fiance.  Three people with different lives come together and discover love, sex and marriage all the while living a BDSM life on a cattle ranch.

Before I wrote the book, I had to do a lot of research. I looked up everything from Wyoming's climate and temperature, life on a cattle ranch to what it is like for someone in the BDSM Lifestyle.  It took me awhile to gather enough information before I felt confident enough to actually start writing the book.

Since this is a book set on a cattle ranch in Wyoming, you are probably wondering why did I choose to add the BDSM angle to it? Some romances focus heavily either on the ranching part or the romance part, whereas I did my best to show that BDSM, romance and the business of ranching were an integral part of their everyday life. To me, the BDSM, emphasized the Ally and Jake's willing to trust Max's guidance in nearly every aspect of their lives despite coming from a less than stellar past themselves.  And for Max, his decision to be a dominant in a menage that contained a male was fascinating because he came from a household that was run by a domineering man and never wanted to experience that again.

Some of my BDSM research entailed reading the books from my fellow erotic romance authors while the rest consisted of reading articles by men and women who lived it. I found the articles to be the most enlightening. Many of the Doms and subs likened their commitment and service to each other as a very spiritual experience that was heightened by their emotional attachment to the partner in the relationship or because of the fulfillment they gained by living out their respective roles.

Many of them said that when they were with their partner or partners, they experienced a profound union of minds, hearts as well as their bodies with their significant others. The submissives also said their submission was an expression of dominance and freedom because they chose who they gave their submission to and when they wanted to give it.

Like the submissives in the articles, Jake Hargate found that his life as a switch gave him the freedom to love and live the way he has always wanted.  So when Jake's past comes back to haunt him, Jake is determined to shield Ally and Max from it, for fear of that evil taking away the only happiness he has ever had.

Jake, Ally and Max's love is authentic, honest, true and very intimate. They have a life that is right for them and they are very happy with it. Ally and Jake's submission to Max gives them a comfort that some people would find unnerving but they find it comforting.

Because of their authentic love and Max's charismatic dominance, many people are drawn to them. In fact, I've been asked to expand this book into a series in order to explore the lives of a few of the people mentioned in the book.  Hmmmm.... I like the idea of that.

I hope you will like the book too.  Here's a quick snippet:

Sexy Excerpt

Blindfolded Jake sat on his haunches. He felt a gentle brush of his Master’s finger across his chin.

“Relax Orchid,” Max said. “I can see the tension rising in your shoulders.”

“Yes, Master,” Jake replied with a sigh. He opened his thoughts to the messages his body was sending to his brain. The gentle sting of the rough rope entwined around his wrists as they lay nestled in the crevice of his upper back.

Jake inhaled deeply and centered his mind concentrating on the sensation of his body as he knelt on the floor. The plush, soft carpet enveloped his knees. It smelled of fresh flowers from the cleaner that their wife loved to use. He adjusted his position on the carpet, spreading his legs farther apart further increasing the tension on his legs. He groaned with pleasure, then flexed his chest and back muscles. Stimulated to the fullest, his mind threatened to overload.

“Orchid focus on my loving embrace,” Max said.

Jake sighed. “Yes Master.”

Stay in the present. Bondage had been the best thing Max had given him for handling his anxieties. Throughout their training, Max said the core of Jake’s anxiety was rooted in his tendency to stray away from the moment.

The rope around his torso tightened. Not enough to restrict his breathing but just enough to send waves of arousal to his dick. Instantly, all errant thoughts fled his mind.

“I love you Master,” he said.

“I love you too Orchid,” Max replied.

Being Max's submissive gives Jake the security he needs, and topping Ally gives him the control he craves.

But when a political scandal threatens to ruin Jake's brother, a prominent governor who hopes to move up the political ladder, Jake is drawn into a dark world of vengeance he swore he'd never enter again. Jake's family gives him a choice: help them or risk the life he cherishes with Max and Ally.
