Writers' experiences of writing gay/shifter/BDSM stories

The sixth in my series on writers’ experiences of writing gay, shifter or BDSM stories is from me talking about my experiences of writing BDSM.

I was inspired to write several scenes in my forthcoming book ‘To Claim a Mate’ after attending Smut in the City last autumn. This event was held at Miss Ts in Stockport – a BDSM club - and after the workshops and readings we got a chance to try out the equipment, see a demo and talk to the Doms.

When the sub in my story (Jared) first visits Balls & Chains he sees that each room has a different purpose – one room has paddling benches and another has crosses on which to restrain the subs and on the walls are rows of implements. I got the idea of having the tools displayed this way from Miss Ts, although her venue is quite small and Balls & Chains is much larger so I was able to split out the activities into different rooms.

Then Jared looked around the walls and bit his lip in excitement. There was a multitude of diverse paddles of all shapes and sizes. He hadn’t appreciated there were so many different sorts.

For one room in my story I got the idea from a squash court with a transparent wall so spectators can see the action without getting harmed. Part of that notion was inspired by how small Miss Ts was as it occurred to me if more than one Dom wanted to work in there, you had to be careful to avoid hitting passers by (as happens in my story when the incompetent Master the sub is with at the beginning of the story gets carried away!)

Unlike Miss Ts, though, I have specially employed dungeon masters in my story however, the Doms at her venue do look out for their fellow attendees. It is a dangerous activity, so it is good that they watch out for others. So in keeping in that spirit I did have a Dom making a comment to the incompetent Master in my story.

The demo we saw at Miss Ts had Smut organiser, Victoria Blisse, being the volunteer submissive and some of the resident Doms took turns using floggers, whips, paddles, etc, on her and giving us a description of how they worked.

This was incredibly helpful and I included a scene in ‘To Claim a Mate’ where a demo of a single tailed whip was held (in my story, though, they have a special room with a stage for such activities!). I don’t remember the name of the Dom who used this whip at Miss Ts but I loved how he caught the whip as is snapped back so he could control it for the next strike (all this is captured in the scene in my story when Master Cole gives his demo).

One tool they showed us was called ‘A Claw’ which had originally been invented, I believe, for pulling pork but was great for sensation play. I made a note at the time that I would include claws in my next werewolf story (as ‘To Claim a Mate’ is a story of wolf shifters in a BDSM club, the use of claws for sensation play makes an appearance!)

The resident Doms were great at answering the probing questions of us research-hungry erotica writers. For instance, I saw that one of them was only hitting Victoria’s exposed flesh of her shoulders and thighs. When I asked why he didn’t hit her on her covered backside, the answer was that he could see what effect the strike was having on her body (which was getting covered with red marks all over) and could avoid overdoing it that way. Of course, it depends on the implement but I included this reference in my story.

They also gave us some very useful tips on things that are more difficult to learn, such as how to be dominant. One thing he talked was about increasing the sub’s anticipation by taking his time, doing the unexpected, eg, approach the sub but instead of hitting, maybe blow on their neck or kiss their shoulder. Cole, in my story, does exactly that to the sub.

Jared jumped when Master Cole kissed him gently on his neck. It shocked him to the core. He didn’t dare look at Dirk to see his reaction. Meanwhile, the skin where the other man had placed his lips burned into Jared like a brand.
“And doing something unforeseen will confound the sub even further. He doesn’t know whether to expect pain or pleasure—or both.”

The other thing that was very helpful was Victoria describing the sensations as she was hit. For instance, one of the Doms used a ‘Little Bastard’ on her – a paddle with thick rectangular block of rubber (which also appears in my story, of course!). Victoria said that the pain bloomed as time went on even after the Dom had stopped using it (which makes it doubly painful for Jared as Master Dirk – the incompetent – rhymes with jerk -  keeps on hitting).

Many thanks, to Victoria, Miss Ts and the Doms for all their help that day (and I have dedicated ‘To Claim a Mate’ to them. J )

Cole Linley is a gay wolf-shifter. In order to appease the Alpha within, he has taken up the BDSM lifestyle and become very experienced. This placates his wolf to a certain extent, but his dearest wish is to find a mate—male, of course. Except, the question is, how to find one in a city surrounded by humans where other wolf-shifters are rare.

Then, one night, he enters Balls & Chains, a BDSM club he frequents, and immediately senses another of his kind. And not only that, it is the scent of a potential mate, Jared Gray. There is only one problem—Jared is collared by another Master.

Jared’s relationship shows all the signs of an abusive relationship. Can Cole get him away from the other Dom and show Jared the delights of BDSM when done properly and what it means to be a beta wolf to Cole’s Alpha?

Writers' experiences writing gay/shifter or BDSM stories

The fifth in my series on writers’ experiences of writing gay, shifter or BDSM stories is from Evelise Archer who tells us her experiences of writing gay sex.

Thank you for having me on your blog 😊

I love writing in the M/M genre. I feel like a sponge every time I get ahold of a new book or start to write one of my own. There’s something about two everyday guys falling passionately head over heels for each other and living happily ever after.

Depending on what the premise of me book is, I start my research right away; before I even formulate all my ideas. Then I begin my GMC (Goal, Motivation, Conflict) and plot out the storyline and the characters. Adding a bit about myself or someone in my family always spices the story up for me and allows me to imbed an air of truth into the plot and/or characters.

My latest book, Jaeger, Order of the Black Knights took a bit of research because I wanted to get all the traveling/hiding Jaeger and Wren did through the Adirondack Mountains. I also wanted the governmental aspect accurate (US Marshal), so I talked to others in the field and did my own research. As far as imbedding a piece of myself into the characters, I am bilingual, so creating Wren as a Venezuelan man, who of course speaks fluent Spanish, was not a problem to write.

The best thing I can say about writing M/M is the freedom to reinvent characters any way I choose and not have to follow societal conventions. Each of my men are their own unique person and hopefully readers will see that too.

Jaeger Blurb

US Marshal Jaeger Tripp is assigned to the Federal Witness Protection Program. The hurt and destruction he’s seen—along with protecting criminals who are only cooperating with the authorities to keep themselves out of jail—have left him with a bleak and jaded view of both life and people. His current assignment is Wren O’Riley, a computer wizard who witnessed a high-profile cartel hit.

To Jaeger, Wren is the same as any other job. He must protect him long enough to get him to testify at trial, and his personal feelings have no place in his work and must be set aside. But that’s easier said than done. On the run and fighting for their lives, Jaeger and Wren can’t help but grow closer. And Jaeger can’t help seeing beyond Wren’s nerdy exterior to a man who might be just what Jaeger needs to settle his soul and capture his heart—if they survive long enough to get that chance.

Order of the Black Knights

Every century has seen its knights. But there are those who are never seen. They do what must be done, what has to be done—when nobody wants to get their hands dirty. They are called the Black Knights. First created in the 1100s by the wizard Moriel, these men seem cold and hard, and it is said that some have no soul. But for each knight, there is one who can bring out the man who waits inside. The question is whether or not he will kill the individual before he figures it out.

Through the ages, they’ve conquered and ruled and taken what they wanted. And they have adapted to modern times. Instead of being bullies for hire, they have taken their skills further—the Internet, the CIA, government infiltration, hacking, special ops, assassination, but each one of them has a need they don’t understand—to squash, kill, or destroy.

If the Knight pardons an enemy, he will no longer be cursed. If not, he will continue to live the same life again and again, and each life will make him harder and more unyielding. And each life will make it is less likely that he can be saved.

Writers' experiences of writing gay/shifter or BDSM stories

The fourth in my series on writers’ experiences of writing gay, shifter or BDSM stories is from Amara Lebel who tells us her experiences of writing gay sex.

I have always had a love for erotica, gay romance in particular. Kallysten is my favourite author of MM erotic romance. I have devoured every last piece of work the woman has ever wrote, repeatedly. I adore her characters, the worlds she created, and the relationships she built within them. She was a huge influence in my decision to write, and of course the genre I chose. Kally was the one who opened my eyes to world of MM romance, and now I am truly obsessed.

I can honestly raise both hands and say that I have an unhealthy addiction to all things man on man. I watch, read and drool over everything to do with gay couples. Be it artistic photography, a gay romance, or even a little porn. Yes, that's right, porn. I'm not a huge fan of it, never really was. Until I went researching some things for my first book. Now, I do find myself enjoying it from time to time. Very inspirational.

I also have a vast Yaoi collection which I devour religiously - for those of you not in the know Yaoi, and/or Shounen-ai, is MM anime and manga, ranging from Light to Hard core. There are so many genres within this genre alone that there will definitely be something for everyone to enjoy. 'Tis very good. I recommend you give it a try.

Now, due to my obsession, I tend to spend a lot of my free time fantasising about steamy scenes of male love, sensual encounters, and so much more. Yes, I am a little perverted, yet in a good way. In my opinion at least. Anyhow, with so much going on in my head I finally decided that maybe I should take the advice of a friend and actually put pen to paper. So I did, and Tristan Bailey and Joshua Malone were born.

When I first sat down to write Denial, the first book in The Unrequited Trilogy, I had someone very close to me in mind; my cousin and his gorgeous husband. Their entire relationship was like a romance novel in my eyes. They had the whole will-they-wont-they thing going on. Keeping me in suspense until the day they finally married in an amazing forties style bash. Their bond and love is so deep, even to this day, and I love seeing it. Theirs is a relationship that rivals many, and I personally think it is so much more because of the fact that they are a gay couple. Their bond is strong and unwavering, regardless of anything that they have experienced due to it. In my eyes, this is true love. And that is the kind of thing I want to write about.

Some of the experiences, and mile stones, my characters reach within their story are actually things my cousin and his husband have went through themselves. From their initial meeting, right up to their Happy Ever After with Samuel in tow. As I've said, their relationship is the thing of romance novels.

Now, I must state that even though I always had my cousin's relationship in mind while writing the Unrequited Trilogy, not everything I write comes from the love I have for them. Their relationship may be the basis of my story. Yet the erotic side of it all is entirely my own imaginings. Because let's face it, that would just be weird! They're family! I will admit though that I once asked my cousin's husband a very general question about intercourse, which he answered, but that's as far as my curiosity went. As I said before. . . that's just wrong!

I gather my inspiration for my sex scenes from other sources, and once I get started on a love scene it just seems to flow. I never really know which direction it will take until it happens; be it rough, soft and sensual, or animalistic. At times I find myself going into more detail in one scene than I would in another. Yet Im never dissatisfied with them when I am finished. I have always found them easy enough to write.

What does she know about gay sex, I hear you say!

Well, if we truly think about it, the act of intercourse - you know, of sticking a penis into a hole - hehe, is basically the same regardless of where said penis goes. Therefore, in my opinion, it isn't all that hard to write about this aspect of the sexual act.

And if I may refer you back to my earlier statement about watching gay porn - I watch it, occasionally ... okay, I watch it a lot! And I've paid real good attention to what goes on. *coughs* I may not be the proud owner of a penis, but I can read people's emotions pretty well, and I am also a boundary-breaking fiend who questioned the man of her life relentlessly about his own penis and experiences, etc, etc. *coughs* there may have also been some experimentation of our own *coughs* Therefore, during certain parts of the love scenes, I am able to work from my own personal experiences.

And in others, as I stated before, I simply ask my husband how it felt for him. And he is always good enough to try to explain these things to me. Throw in the lust, tension, carvings, and all that other raw emotion which makes for a great scene, and I can honestly say that I know enough by now to write me some good MM sex.

If you doubt me, then I ask you to simply purchase one of my books and have a read for yourself. And please, come back and tell me if I succeeded!

Because at the end of the day.  I'm not only writing these books for myself, I'm doing it for you, the readers. Without you I wouldn't it really have much reason to write. I enjoy knowing that someone has read my work and liked it. That its made an impression on you in some way. Even if that impression is negative, I welcome the feedback as it helps me improve myself and better my writing. I doubt there is an author out there who doesn't it crave reader feedback, or their fan-base. If were to be honest, as authors, we are nothing without you.

So keep doing what you're doing, and enjoy the stories we create for you!

Buy links and blurb for Denial:

Tristan Bailey is a man who never takes no for an answer in anything he does or wants. Life treats him good as the CEO of his own airline, and one of New York's finest bachelors. Men and women alike fall at his feet, the world opens to him without complaint. There isn't much he desires. Until he lays eyes on Joshua, that is.

Death has become a living nightmare for Joshua Malone. No matter what he does, a past riveted with pain and destruction follows him and forces him to make life decisions he would rather not. Josh never wanted to be reminded of the heartache that loving someone could bring, but he finds himself struggling to deny Tristan's advances.

Two different worlds collide in a heated meeting of longing and lust. Can the inner fears of one be laid to rest by the newfound love for the other, or will they both be denied?
