This is the fifth day of my blog hop to celebrate the release of two books this month (Friend or Foe and The Sub Who Switched both available from www.bookstrand.com/jennifer-denys and out on Amazon in about a month. They are the final books in the series ‘Friends & Acquaintances’ and ‘Doms & Acquaintances’.
Each day this week I am highlighting a different theme from my stories. Read down to the end because there is a chance to win a prize.
Humour: do readers like to read humour with their sex?
This is normally my ‘Friday Funny’ day hence why I chose this theme for this day. I regard my ‘Friends & Acquaintances’ series as romantic comedies – certainly they are light hearted romances and there is a fair amount of humour in them – although I do include humorous moments in all my stories as I personally find humour in situations in real life.
Unfortunately, the readers don’t seem that keen as the sales of the ‘Doms & Acquaintances’ series, which is BDSM-themed, sell four times as many as the ‘Friends’ series.
My favourite book to write (so far) has been Friendly Seduction as I took great delight in taking the mickey out of my own genre! The hero, who writes sci-fi, has been told by his editor to add more sex to his stories so he asks help from the heroine who tells him exactly what women like (and expect) in their erotic romances like the fact that the hero is always tall, hunky and handsome!
The other one that was fun to write was Friend or Foe as the heroine is the queen of insults so I had a great time researching insults. She has lines like ‘You know so little, and you know it so fluently’ and ‘God really underestimated his ability when he made man’. Thinking about it maybe that should have been ‘overestimated’! Oops.
Of course, humour doesn't have to be about funny lines. I have included instances where I have been involved in funny situations - quite often not intentional, or funny at the time. In The Sub Who Switched there is a scene where the heroine who is suffering from sexual frustration, gets out her new sex toy - a blow up male doll. Unfortunately she found it is as useless as I did!!!!!! But it made for an amusing addition to my story.

So, do leave me a comment telling me if you like to read humour in these type of stories (or if you are an author, what funny things did you write about) . I will choose the most interesting comment each day and the winner will win a free PDF copy of one of my books (see full list on www.bookstrand.com/jennifer-denys). Come back on Sunday when I will have a full list of the winners.
And don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the last day of my blog hop, when the theme is ‘BDSM in erotic romances’.
All the best

Lol. Love the cartoon. I am a reader but have written my first over 50k manu. There is plenty of humour in it. I think having a sense of humour, especially as you get older, helps you deal with awkward situations. For instance, a true story. I met my husband through a chat room. I clicked on his profile. There was a photo of his bare bottom (it was tushy tuesday!) I asked to chat to him, and whispered...."Ive dated some arses in my time, but yours is the nicest one ive seen in ages". We met a few weeks later, and married the following year! 6 years 3 kids 2 mad cats later. We have to have a soh around here. Hubby has a habit of resorting me to giggles whispering "Bazinga" in my ear in church or pulling silly faces when he feels Im worried about something. Good on you!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your 50k, Kooks.

ReplyDeleteGee, I hope the readers like humor, because I love to write it. I've written a couple out-and-out comedies, and even my "serious" stories have humorous scenes and one-liners. This week I subbed a M/M superhero story, and it's definitely a comedy. C'mon. A man in Spandex in love with a man who turns into a dinosaur? Of course it's supposed to be funny. It also gave me the opportunity to finally include a scene in a romance involving a rampaging giant robot with a codpiece the size of a bus. You won't find that in your average Harlequin.

yes, I love humor in my books!... it is about balance. I am not an author but a reader and if a book is just full on action and tension when does one relax or pause to make a coffee? [smile] I like humor in my books and in my life. My husband has the most cheekiest eyes and he constantly cracks me up with his jokes and funny faces. I remember when I was a teenager and this older woman told me 'Dont trust a man who winks, it shows he is insincere'. I remember telling my husband (then boyfriend)and even after all these years, if he thinks someone is being a bit too serious he will turn to me and wink, just to remind me and he cracks me up! By the way he is the most trustworthy person I know. By the way finished 'the sub who switched' a few hours ago! I enjoyed it very much as a lighthearted read. Thankyou.

Thanks for all your comments - and Vanessa for your nice words about 'Sub' - glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteCome back tomorrow for the last day of the blog discussions. This one is whether BDSM should be restricted to erotica or whether it has it's place in erotic romance.

Why did my comment print twice? No idea. I sent it once, thought it printed, came back later in the day, saw it was gone, re-sent a different version, and now there are two. Sorry about that.
ReplyDeleteHi Pat
DeleteYour other comment went into my spam for some reason(?!). I published it before I realised you had already commented and since it was slightly different I left it so no need for apologies but it was thoughtful of you anyway.
